Early examples are already here. AI Dungeon showed what dynamic storytelling with language models could do. Minecraft servers are experimenting with AI villagers that build and trade autonomously. Companies like Altera are creating AI companions that feel genuinely intelligent rather than scripted.

The commercial potential is wild. These games could generate infinite personalized content while producing valuable training data for real-world applications. A game where players teach AI to run businesses could yield insights for actual economic modeling. Virtual city planning collaborations could inform real urban development.

Teaching values before power

The ultimate goal here isn’t just creating smarter AI – it’s creating AI that understands human context and acts appropriately. Games let us monitor behavior, shape values, and teach responsibility while the AI is still developing. We become mentors rather than masters.

Major companies are already investing heavily. Google Research has its Generate Agents paper, Microsoft has the Game Intelligence Group. They recognize that the only way to safely create powerful AI is to teach values alongside intelligence. Using gameplay to teach AI might sound like a cute metaphor, but it’s becoming a serious strategy for raising AI that can actually cooperate and coexist with humans.
