The conversion process represents a significant engineering achievement. ProEnergy takes retired CF6-80C2 jet engine cores – originally manufactured by General Electric for aircraft including the Boeing 747-400, 767, and MD-11, as well as the Airbus A300 and A310 – and transforms them into powerful PE6000 gas turbines. The modification involves expanding the turbine section to convert engine thrust into usable shaft power, adding structural supports for stationary installation, and implementing new control systems. The resulting units deliver an impressive 48MW of capacity each, providing substantial power for demanding data center operations.

“We have sold 21 gas turbines for two data center projects amounting to more than 1GW,” revealed Landon Tessmer, VP of commercial operations at ProEnergy. “Both projects are expected to provide bridging power for five to seven years, which is when they expect to have grid interconnection and no longer need permanent behind-the-meter generation.”

As Tessmer explained, these units provide reliable power during construction phases and initial operations while data center operators await permanent grid connections. This approach addresses one of the most significant bottlenecks in data center deployment – the lengthy process of securing adequate power infrastructure.

“The constrained nature of the gas turbine market drove our decision to repurpose jet engines as mobile generators for data centers,” Tessmer noted. “Wait times for traditional turbines are beginning to approach those for grid-based power connections.”

ProEnergy’s focused approach on a single engine model – the CF6-80C2 – enables significant efficiencies in engineering and maintenance. The company matches the retrofitted engine cores with newly manufactured aero-derivative components produced by ProEnergy or its partners. Each power block includes:

With approximately 1,000 CF6-80C2 engines expected to be retired over the next decade, ProEnergy has identified a sustainable pathway to repurpose valuable engineering assets while addressing critical infrastructure needs.
