Roblox is making facial age checks mandatory for chat - Professional coverage

According to Windows Report | Error-free Tech Life, Roblox is rolling out mandatory facial age verification for chat access starting with a voluntary period on November 18, 2025. The requirement goes live in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands in early December 2025, with global implementation planned for January 2026 wherever chat features exist. The system uses either Facial Age Estimation or ID verification, with all images and videos deleted immediately after processing. Verified users get placed into specific age groups that determine who they can chat with, separating minors from adults. Children under nine will have chat disabled by default without parental consent, while those under thirteen face stricter content filtering. The company says this will significantly reduce contact between minors and adults while preserving family communication through Trusted Connections.

How the age verification system actually functions

Here’s the thing about facial age estimation – it’s not facial recognition. The system analyzes your facial features to estimate your age range rather than identifying who you are. Roblox is using two paths: quick facial analysis for most users and full ID verification for edge cases. They’re making a big deal about immediately deleting the verification data, which is smart given the privacy concerns. But honestly, how accurate can these systems really be? We’ve all seen those stories about AI misjudging ages by years. The company’s betting that the trade-off between privacy and safety will satisfy both regulators and parents.

The real impact on user safety

This is probably the most aggressive move we’ve seen from a major gaming platform to address the minor-adult interaction problem. By walling off age groups, they’re fundamentally changing how social interaction works on the platform. Younger kids can only talk to other younger kids, while teens get slightly more freedom. Adults get the broadest access but can’t interact with minors at all. The Trusted Connections feature is the safety valve here – it lets families communicate across these barriers. But here’s my question: will this actually stop determined bad actors, or just make casual inappropriate contacts less likely?

Where this fits in the bigger picture

Roblox isn’t operating in a vacuum here. Regulators worldwide are cracking down on child safety online, and we’re seeing similar moves from Meta, OpenAI, and others. The difference is scale – Roblox has millions of young users who treat the platform as both game and social network. They’re extending these checks to social media links and creator tools next year too. Basically, they’re building a comprehensive age-gating system that could become the industry standard. Whether this becomes the new normal or faces pushback from privacy advocates remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear – the era of anonymous online interaction for kids is rapidly ending.
