The requirement goes live in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands in early December 2025, with global implementation planned for January 2026 wherever chat features exist. The system uses either Facial Age Estimation or ID verification, with all images and videos deleted immediately after processing. Verified users get placed into specific age groups that determine who they can chat with, separating minors from adults. Children under nine will have chat disabled by default without parental consent, while those under thirteen face stricter content filtering. The company says this will significantly reduce contact between minors and adults while preserving family communication through Trusted Connections.
How the age verification system actually functions
